Phony Smiles & Artificial Laughter
i was absolutely cross with a phony smiling female yesterday and what irked me the most was the fact that she could deliver a 'put down' with an artificial laugh which grated on my nerves!.i admit my temper gets the better of me and when that happens, sarcasm drips. Unfortunately, this creature that got under my skin is so dense that my sarcasm eluded her and instead i get her phony smiles...arghh.
This is not my first encounter with someone who by some magical inborn device can summon artificial laughter and have a phony smile plastered on their dishonest faces.i bet most of you have come across these people and i am not talking about politicians or smooth talking sales people. My first encounter with a phony smile was from a politician, a former boss.i stared and stared and almost blurted out to ask her if something was wrong with her face that particular day...too much foundation?.i recounted the incident to a dear friend with much knowledge in this kind of matters.She sagely went on to regale me with the many types of phony smiles and artificial laughter from a diverse group of people mostly in the service industry mind you and she also gave me pointers on how to spot them from a mile away.
The pointers work but i must say some have perfected frozen smiles that they must be given an award. i am quick to retorts and on some occasions, i have bluntly told these phonies that their lipstick had bled onto their teeth or did you just come back from a facelift that included a permanent smile. i cringe to think how the owner of a perpetual smile reacts to bad and sad news.
The smile, i can still stomach but the shrill ringing in my ears from an artificial laughter takes much longer to recover from.i can be very blunt when i speak and when i have nothing to say especially to a laughter that warrants no response, well i just look the person in the eye without so much as a smile, hoping the imbecile or ignoramus snaps back to reality and chokes on the spittle of his or her own dispeakable laughter!.
Lord, they are everywhere these days and i cannot imagine how such an insincere smile could ever lift one's spirit or an artificial laugh making your day?
A smile from deep within and given with all sincerity can be seen from the crinkle of the person's eyes and heartfelt laughter will bring tears to your eyes and joy to your soul.
So, what do u do when u get a phony smile from behind a counter? i say, smile wider and tell the person, 'you have a wonderful smile'!. If someone laughs and you detect that it is not sincere, laugh harder and say, 'you sure are ''funny''.'
Laughter is the best medicine, so laugh with all your heart and smiles can build bridges, so smile from the heart. Phony smiles and artificial laughter will always be detected and it says a lot about that person.
