Insensitive Discrimination Creates Discord
It was with utter dismay that i discovered the absence of any recognition of the recently celebrated Festival Of Lights in a bimonthly magazine published for a well known retail giant. As a card member,i'm entitled to a free copy which i diligently collect to look out for new products, articles to read, happenings and snippets that i really enjoy.
In the last issue (Sept/Oct),when i didn't see any highlights for Diwali,i assumed it would appear in the following issue (Nov/Dec). Imagine my disappointment when it wasn't there in the last issue for this year. There were pages of recipes, clothing and decor ideas for the other major festivals celebrated in Malaysia but not for the Festival Of Lights. An oversight by the editor? or a total lack of sensitivity for another culture?. No excuse can compensate for the absolute disregard and dismissal of the festival altogether.
It all boils down to respecting another culture and having the decency and courtesy to accord the same treatment for one and all. It's about getting to know if you are ignorant and extending fellowship to others who celebrate different festivals. It is a matter not to be trivialised as it concerns the sensitivity of people involved.
It's disgraceful that humans are not advancing in the manner which is important and serve humanity. Humans are spiralling fast downwards to undermine the principles of solidarity and goodwill. How does one practise and live in peace in a multicultural environment when the fundamentals of harmony isn't understood?.Too many aren't bothered nor take the time and make an effort to find out about that which is different from what they know. The insensitivity arising out of ignorance results in discrimination which in turn cause much discord and displeasure.
Forgetting or disregarding a festival in a magazine may seem a non issue to many but it all starts from something small and totally unimportant, isn't it?. The fact that it was forgotten or plain disregarded says a lot about the editor and i'm put off by such blatant disrespect.i know discrimination comes in many forms and it's everywhere. It's not going to go away anytime soon either but i do not have to condone it.
People who discriminate are actually pathetic. They are so insecure that they need to put someone else down. They fail to put themselves in another's shoes nor care about the feelings of others.Being sensitive does not mean that one is weak but being insensitive does.
