Fast,Rush& Hurried...for?
'The days fly once it is June...towards year end, to welcome a new year'. My mother never fails to say this every year in June and over the years i find that it is indeed true. People the world over seem to wait for the year to end and this year the wait is even more special or sceptical for some...to see whether the Mayan's indeed saw the future and the world coming to an end on 21.12.2012.
It seems even the world is in a mad,mad rush to end? and are we humans the major factor for contributing to the fast and hurried last lap?
i detest anything that is fast when it is not supposed to be that is.i relish home cooked meals and slow eating instead of fast food and wolfing down food!.i dislike being rushed when there is no reason to. To be hurried?don't even get me started!.
The chinese writer, Lin Yutang said: "If you can spend a perfectly useless afternoon in a perfectly useless manner, you have learned how to live".
i have my notebook of inspirational quotes to motivate me when i'm feeling blue and this particular quote really hit a chord within me because i cannot sit still-There i said it. i feel the need to be occupied with some activity or the other at all times.i get restless when i have nothing to do and when i am out running errands,i am always in a mad rush to get as much done as possible.i feel satisfied 'ticking off' the list in my head despite the sap of energy.
Yes, Lin Yutang made me ponder and take a step towards doing nothing and not feeling bad about it.i realised that it is alright to answer-'i'm doing nothing when someone asks me "The" question.
Family and friends do look at me funnily and sometimes comment when i take my time finishing meals or browsing in my favourite bookshop but hey i am entitled to relish each morsel that goes into my mouth and feel the joy when i flip pages of an exciting book. How can one possibly rush such pleasurable activites involving the senses?
Apparently and sadly, many are rushing from one place to the other and from one task to another. You can see harried mothers, workers and all about everyone in your circle of friends, community and the world-moving fast, running even to get their jobs done.Hurrying merely to finish and to say, 'i am done'.The common reason being, you have got to move with the times and you have got to be fast and not be left out. Be a slow moe and you are left in the snow?
What is the repercussion? the result of one too many cramped activities over a prolonged period of time?Yup,it is stress, burnout - BIGTIME!. Is it all worth it? Well, it is year end and time to reflect on the year that is to be, so it is not to late to step back and slow down, perhaps?
Christmas is still two weeks away, yet a shopping mall has started selling 'Snake year' t-shirts and bamboo plants. Err...isn't the Chinese New Year two months away? Retailers-Do you not take into account the sensitivity of your customers? Best be ahead huh? The rush to be first?. i was taken aback and wondered if others would think the same.
In our pursuit for wanting everything quickly and always in a rush to finish, we should remember that there are things that get bypassed and lost forever because of the blur that is caused by the speed in which we move and that sadly are the most precious of moments.
