Words Do Not Matter In A World Of Silence
i cannot sign and have never been in a situation where i had to communicate with a mute person. i was faced with such a situation last week and it was an eye opener.
No words needed in a world of silence and a different set of problems to overcome. How do you express a joke?. How do you relate a message without causing any misunderstanding?. Having a sense of humour helps.Being patient and letting the 'silent' person 'speak' is important instead of just focusing on getting across what you want to say.
i felt helpless while the person in front of me was all smiles and in no hurry to communicate with me. He was not the least perturbed and did his best to understand my fumbling finger movements and worried expression!. He just wanted to 'talk', 'listen' and enjoy my company.
Eventually,i relaxed and laughed along as we both managed to understand...more or less to accomplish what we wanted - To walk to a nearby fruit stall to buy fruits. Oh!, we talked and talked along the way...And back. It was fun and i had a nice walk...And talk with a new friend.
The experience was touching for me.It's not so much how and what we say but how and what we feel, then take action which really matters most. The world of silence may not have words and sounds but the 'speakers' know what to say and say what they mean in the most beautiful way.
